I’m Anu Ganguli. If you clicked onto this page, you’re probably reading my story in LOOKING FOR BAPU. I shaved my head to become like the holy men in India, but I forgot about class pictures! Now my parents are taking me to Wilson’s Wigs for All Reasons to buy a hairpiece for school.

I’d rather go bald, but I’ll wear a wig for my parents.

Did you know the word wig came from the word periwig? Wigs can be made of synthetic fibers or real hair – horse hair, human hair, wool, or nose-hairs. Oops, maybe not nose hairs (my dad might have enough nose hairs to make a wig, but don’t tell him I said that).

Wigs are fun and fashionable. You don’t have to worry about styling your hair. Wigs hide baldness, and some people use them for cultural, religious or festive purposes. Some people put wigs on their pets (see picture at left).

Wigs are important for young people, who can lose their hair for many reasons – from health problems, burn accidents, or medical treatments. Wigs might help kids feel better. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about how they look, when they’re already going through a hard time.

You can donate your hair to someone in need. Visit Wigs for Kids for more information.
