My name is Izzy Mumu. I’m Anu’s friend in the novel, LOOKING FOR BAPU. Anu’s grandpa, Bapu passed away, and now Anu is trying to become a sadhu –a Hindu holy man – so he can reach his grandpa’s spirit.

I’m worried about Anu. He shaved his head to become holy, and now he rolls over grass and stones, sticks and mud. All to bring back Bapu. Anu even rolls to school. I’m afraid he might hurt his head.

He says sadhus don’t get hurt. Some holy men roll thousands of miles – over garbage, broken glass, and sharp rocks – to achieve world peace. The famous Ludkan Baba, also known as the “Rolling Saint,” turned himself over and over like a log for 19 years and thousands of miles, all across India. Maybe he’s still going. If you want to become a holy roller, you might have to talk to Anu. Or maybe you’ll have to fly to India and consult a sadhu!
